The Palm Islands in Dubai are the three largest artificial islands in the world. They are being constructed by Nakheel Properties, a property developer in the United Arab Emirates, who hired the Dutch dredging and marine contractor Van Oord, one of the world's specialists in land reclamation. The islands are The Palm Jumeirah, The Palm Jebel Ali and The Palm Deira.
The islands were commissioned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in order to increase Dubai's tourism. Each settlement will be in the shape of a palm tree, topped with a crescent, and will have a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment centers. The Palm Islands are located off the coast of The United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf and will add 520 km of beaches to the city of Dubai.
The first two islands will comprise approximately 100 million cubic meters of rock and sand. Palm Deira will be composed of approximately 1 billion cubic meters of rock and sand. All materials will be quarried in the UAE. Between the three islands there will be over 100 luxury hotels, exclusive residential beach side villas and apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities and health spas.
The creation of The Palm Jumeirah began in June 2001. Shortly after, The Palm Jebel Ali was announced and reclamation work began. In 2004, The Palm Deira, which will be almost as large in size as Paris, was announced. Palm Jumeirah is currently open for development. Construction will be completed over the next 10-15 years.

1.The Palm, Jebel Ali
The Palm, Jebel Ali began construction in October 2002 and is expected to be completed in mid 2008.[1] The Jebel Ali is expected to accommodate 250,000 people and once it has been completed it will be encircled by the Dubai Waterfront project. The project, which will be 50 percent larger than the Palm Jumeriah, will include six marinas, a water theme park, 'Sea Village', homes built on stilts above the water, and boardwalks that circle the "fronds" of the "palm" and spell out an Arabic poem by Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum:[1]
Take wisdom from the wise
It takes a man of vision to write on water
Not everyone who rides a horse is a jockey
Great men rise to greater challenges
One of the first buildings on The Palm Jebel Ali is already known. Nakheel invited several architects to design a building on a 300,000m² area. The winning design was a building by Royal Haskoning, who also worked on several other projects in Dubai.[2] The building can be seen here.

The Palm, Deira
The Palm Deira on 1 May 2007The Palm Deira was announced for development on October 2004 and completion is expected in 2015, when it will become the largest of the three Palm Islands with 41 fronds.[3][1] Projections indicate that construction will consume over a billion cubic meters of rock and sand. [citation needed] According to the company Ten Real Estate, "The Palm Deira will cover 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) in length and 8.5 kilometers (5.3 miles) in width and have an area of 80 square kilometers (861 million square feet). It will consist of residential property, marinas, shopping malls, sports facilities, and clubs. The residential area will be located on the fronds and will contain 8,000 two-story town houses in three distinct styles - Premier Villas, Grand Villas and Vista Town Homes"[3]

The World island
The World is a man-made archipelago of 300 islands in the shape of a world map currently being built off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The World is one of a series of artificial island projects in Dubai, along with the Palm Islands, and like the other islands The World is being built primarily using sand dredged from the sea. The World is the brainchild of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai.
Each island ranges from 23,000 m² to 84,000 m² (250,000–900,000 square feet or 5.7–21 acres) in size, with 50–100 m of water between each island. The development will cover an area of 9 km in length and 6 km in width, surrounded by an oval breakwater. The only means of transport between the islands will be by boat and helicopter. Prices for the islands will range from $15-45 million (USD). The average price for an island will be around $25 million (USD). Dredging started in 2004 and as of March of 2007 The World is around 90% complete.
According to the National Geographic Channel (The Best of Megastructures) the overall price for the World is $14 Billion US Dollars.
It is owned and is being constructed by Nakheel Properties (Nakheel Corp.)
It will be located 4.1 km off the shore of Jumeirah, close to Palm Jumeirah, between Burj Al Arab and Port Rashid of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The World is sometimes mistakenly referred to as The Palm World. It is also known as the Globe Islands

The Dubai Waterfront is proposed to become the largest waterfront and largest man-made development in the world. [1] The project is a conglomeration of canals and artificial islands; it will occupy the last remaining Persian Gulf coastline of Dubai, the most populous emirate of the United Arab Emirates. It will consist of a series of zones with mixed use including commercial, residential, resort, and amenity areas. [1] The vision of the project is "to create a world-class destination for residents, visitors and businesses in the world's fastest growing city". [1]
Dubai Waterfront LogoRun by the Dubai Waterfront Company, the project is open to foreign investment with its real estate developer, Nakheel Properties, owning a 51% stake. [2]
The artificial islands, shaped in an arc, will produce a shelter around the The Palm, Jebel Ali, one of the three Palm Islands, the largest artificial islands (shaped like palm trees) in the world also being constructed by Nakheel Properties. [3] The project will also feature a 75 kilometer Arabian Canal that will run from the coast into the desert and a major harbor. [2]
The Dubai Waterfront will extend Dubai's coastline by 820 kilometers, twelve times the length of its current coastline. [3] It will consist of 440 square kilometers of water and land developments, an area seven times the size of Manhattan, New York in the United States. [citation needed] It is expected to house 400,000 people. [citation needed]
Located near the new Dubai World Central International Airport, and with direct access to Sheikh Zayed Road, Jebel Ali Freezone and Abu Dhabi, the city will be fully accessible on a local and international scale.
The project will feature hundreds of waterfront developments and planned communities. It will consist of 10 key areas including Madinat Al Arab [1], which is expected to become the new downtown and central business district of Dubai. [3] Madinat Al Arab has been carefully crafted and developed by an international consortium of highly regarded architects, planners and urban developers. [2] It will be anchored by Al Burj, which when completed is expected to be 700 - 1200 meters in height, making it one of the world's tallest buildings. Madinat Al Arab will feature resorts, retail, commercial spaces, public spaces, a broad mix of residencies and an integrated transport system including light rail and a sophisticated road network.
The first phase of Madinat Al Arab (30%) was unveiled to a select invited group of private property and investment institutions from the United Arab Emirates and Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf in July 2005. Within five days, it had been completely sold out, for over 13 billion AED.
Other key zones include Al Ras [2], Corniche [3], The Riviera [4], The Palm Boulevard [5], The Peninsula [6], Uptown, Downtown, Boulevard, and The Exchange [7]. [4]
The Dubai Waterfront is being built on Dubai's last remaining surfing reef, the only point-break in United Arab Emirates. With a little bit of planning surfing could have been included into Dubai Waterfront's plans providing additional amenity and a potential additional tourist activity.
